TransUnion's Breach Victims Platform Migration

Migrating 1M users to an ADA compliant platform.
Background
As part of TransUnion’s 2023 accessibility initiative, our teams collaborated to update platforms for ADA compliance and migrate users from legacy systems to accessible ones.
Role: Product Designer
Key Contributions:
1. Designed and built a responsive, modular component for the credit safety feature 'Credit Lock' that exceeds accessibility standards. Developed new dynamic content to guide users on when and how to use the feature.
2. Integrated new platform functionality to display all three major bureau credit scores in addition to only TransUnion.
3. Simplified and prioritized key information across the activation landing page and five other content-heavy membership tools.

New Features Built:
Role: Lead Product Designer
Business Background
Through the audit, we could clearly understand what features and content needed to be built or transferred to CVD.
Integrate and Iterate
TransUnion — best known as a credit bureau and data solutions provider — acquired the identity protection company Sontiq. Over the following years, cross-functional teams in product, design, and technology collaborated to integrate and iterate Sontiq’s core features and value within TransUnion’s product ecosystem.
Backend Technology Modernization
An effort to replace and update programming languages, frameworks, databases, APIs, infrastructure, with the goals of reducxing tech debt, faster development, reliability, and increased security.
Findings: Additional content will need to be transferred and improved from the old UI to the new.

Unaligned PM's
We were working closly with one PM, and late into the project, we found out about additional work (login and activation pages) from a separate PM that was also working on the product migration.

Deadline Challenges
During a Legal and Compliance review for proposed feature functionality changes, we were asked to go through a full STAR review, which usually takes weeks.

Provided clear breakdown of why the proposed changes are more appropriate for feature, but because of set deadlines, we needed to revert back to the original functionality for initial release

Competitive Analysis
Including Experian, Credit Sesame, & Equifax
Research and document how both direct and indirect competitors present the following credit-related features in their platforms, considering design, terminology, ease of use, and user comprehension.
Research Questions:
1. Price of each subscription, price of 3b?
2. What does a first time user see?
3. Where does a user go to learn more about 3B/credit lock?
4. What does the credit report/lock look like in different states?
5. What does the dashboard look like while active versus inactive?

Key takeaway:
- Displaying 3 graphs next to eachother does not offer user much value, but instead creates visual distraction.
Credit Lock Feature: How is the feature that prevents new credit from being opened (credit lock) introduced, explained, and activated?

Key takeaway:
- No competitors currently offer a credit lock widget on their dashboards, even though it's a tool that would be especially useful for quick access.

I created multiple visual concepts, leveraging the platform’s current layout to facilitate discussions with the design team
Stakeholder Reviews
Aligning with product, dev, and legal and compliance.
Discussed with product and dev the different dashboard modification options, and slimmed down changes to only what was necessary for the initial release, while keeping more robust designs for future releases.
Reviewed the new credit lock widget functionality with developers.
Conducted multiple legal review rounds: discussed current and new designs/content/functionality. By the end, we had come to agreement on most changes, but still had legal pushback on the new credit lock functionality. Because of time constraints, we needed to fall back on an outdated modal process (see below).

UX Documentation & Dev Passover

I met with both development teams to walk through the final designs, covering responsive maps, error and submit states, component maps, multiple offer bundle layouts, and page-specific notes.
QA Work
As dev work was being completed, I compiled specific notes on missing or incorrect work and met with out teams weekly to discuss and prioritize.
My takeaways
Ask to have the initial kick off meeting with all product managers involved.
Why? Because not all PM's are aligned with one another, and this is an essential part of a successful release. Near the end of the design work, we found out about an additional ask (the entire activation/login pages) from a different PM we hadn't been working with.
Work with the PM's while they are writing stories
Even though I had reviewed UX documentation with the developers and PMs, I found several items incomplete during QA because they were not explicitly included in their stories.
Use MVP thinking first
We spent significant time researching and designing a premium 3B dashboard design that was later scaled back to an MVP. As a result, the credit lock feature was rushed, and we didn’t have enough time to get its new functionality fully approved.
